Björn Embrén, arboricultural manager for the Municipality of Stockholm, presents the award-winning 'Stockholm Solution' to cost effectively provide renewable energy, scale-up sustainable drainage solutions, sequester carbon, reduce waste and facilitate community participation while achieving healthy and lasting growth for urban trees in hard landscapes.

In this presentation, a tree management expert from Stockholm discusses the challenges and innovative solutions for urban tree growth in hard surfaces. With around 30,000 to 40,000 trees in the city, many face difficulties due to compacted soil and inadequate water access. The speaker highlights a successful method involving structured soils made from locally sourced granite and recycled materials, which allows for better root development and water infiltration. This approach has led to significant improvements in tree health and growth rates, demonstrating the potential for sustainable urban forestry practices.
