According to research, street trees have a high mortality rate and very short lifespans. Although different species and planting locations may be expected to have a range of tree lifespans, this enormous range of reported street tree lifespans also speaks to the variety of methods used to assess survival and estimate lifespans. However, methods to quantify tree vital rates and lifespan metrics have been more fully developed in other disciplines; these methods have the potential to advance researchers' understanding of urban tree survival and mortality.
